Some quick and dirty reviews
Not that kind of dirty.
The Art of Racing in the Rain - Gentle book, written from the perspective of a strangely intelligent and insightful dog, Enzo. I had a bit of a hard time buying into the depth of the narrator, but I did enjoy the story, and almost cried on the bus.
The Postmistress - Really liked this. World War II, a female journalist pushing to uncover the story of the holocaust before anyone believed it was happening, interwoven with a New England town's experience of that part of the war. It did make me cry on the bus.
Midwife of Venice - Basic premise is that in the 1500s, in very segregated Venice, a Jewish midwife helps a Christian mother of nobility birth her baby. Oh, and she invents the forceps. Not a bad read, but if you have something better to read, I wouldn't bother.
Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance - A chapter by chapter look at things doctors do, and how they could be improved. Handwashing, vaccinations, obstetrics, war medicine, innovation, etc. Found it interesting and entertaining, pretty quick read. Nothing too deep. Did not make me cry at all.
